Singelloop Utrecht

October 5, 2025
Singelloop Utrecht

The Utrecht Singelloop, also known as the “Canal Run,” holds the distinction of being the Netherlands’ oldest street race, first organized on May 30, 1925, by Nico Munzert. What began as a modest 4.7 km circuit tracing the city’s canals evolved by 1937 into a 10 km route that weaves through Utrecht’s historic center and the Wilhelminapark. Its popularity surged in the 1970s, eventually earning international acclaim, most notably in 2010 when Leonard Komon set a world record for the 10 km distance with a time of 26:44.

Held each year in early autumn, the modern Singelloop offers a range of distances, including the signature 10 km, a 5 km run, and business team relays. In 2025, the race will also host the Dutch 10 km road championships and introduce a Half Marathon to mark its 100th anniversary on October 5. The 2024 edition saw a record turnout of 19,000 participants, underscoring the event’s broad appeal. With its car-free, crowd-filled course looping around picturesque canals and city parks, the Singelloop blends athletic challenge with community celebration, making it a true Utrecht tradition.
